In the most thrilling of stories, when the protagonist is in the middle of tragedy, the screen fades, the italics start, and the character is instantaneously swept into a memory. Reminded of some wise words of wisdom from the past, they are suddenly motivated, inspired, and strengthened to overcome the tragedy in much grandeur.
Growing up, my father always told me stories of his life and of the lives of loved ones around him. In fact, my love for books and writing, has, in part, been built by his talent for telling a tale in a way that has the entire room hooked.
The morals of his most impactful stories were often the same: ‘destiny has its way’. This mantra has played a pivotal role in my life. From navigating elements of childhood to making major long-term decisions in adulthood, the idea that ‘destiny has its way’ has always made me feel at peace. In some ways, it’s a stern reminder to make the right decisions now while they are in your control so that you build a positive future - because otherwise destiny will surely have its way. In other ways, it’s a comforting deep breath that in any difficult situation, as long as you have tried your best, regardless of anything, all will end well - since destiny has its way.
This idea has guided me, sometimes even without me consciously thinking about it, in every significant step I have ever taken and ever will take in life. A pillar of strength, might, and support, this idea proves to be useful both in driving my motivation for continuing to do my best and in trusting the process. Much like my father, I have applied this idea in various parts of my life and continue to do so as I strive to grow while finding happiness and satisfaction in every present moment.
‘Destiny has its way’. That is my version of the grand whisper in a dream amidst tragedy in a thrilling story. This and every memory of us together helps me navigate college, career, adulthood, and also find happiness in the little moments of each day.
Thank you, Dad, for your endless jokes, smiles, hours-long deep conversations of life advice, and, of course, stories.
Happy Birthday :)
